2008 CHDAS Application
Introduction
The Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP)
is offering the Cornelius Hopper Diversity Award Supplement
(CHDAS) to currently-funded TRDRP principal investigators.
This supplement is for the training of promising individuals
who are or who want to pursue careers in the field of tobacco-related
disease research. Supplements may be requested only for
trainees living in California and include those: (a) from
socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, racial, linguistic, and
geographic backgrounds who are and/or have been underrepresented
in tobacco research; or (b) pursuing a research interest
focusing on cultural, societal, or educational problems
as they affect underserved segments of society. Since TRDRP
funds research for the purpose of mitigating the impact
of tobacco-related illness, it is critical to involve persons
from California’s many diverse communities. TRDRP
recognizes the value to science and society of increasing
the variety of investigators doing tobacco-related disease
research and in encouraging these investigators to address
the specific needs of underserved populations. Persons of
diverse training, background, and experience will greatly
enrich the California research enterprise, making it potentially
more effective in tackling issues surrounding tobacco-related
disease and tobacco control.
All TRDRP-funded principal investigators are encouraged
to seek out and identify underrepresented students, fellows,
and eligible members of underserved communities for this
training opportunity. With excellent mentorship, many underrepresented
individuals will not just advance their career goals, but
more importantly make lasting contributions to tobacco-related
disease research in California.
This award supplement is named in honor of Cornelius L.
Hopper, M.D., who was the University of California Vice
President for Health Affairs from 1979 until his retirement
in 2000. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Hopper was
instrumental in establishing statewide research programs,
developing the Wellness Lecture Series, and coordinating
the expansion of primary care training opportunities in
the university.
